At
27, DC
native Dana Kirkpatrick is effectively
carving out a space for herself in the
fiercely competitive art world.
After leaving Georgetown University in May
of 2000 with awards for artistic
excellence under her belt, Kirkpatrick
headed to NYC to begin the arduous task of
self promotion.
Choosing to operate independently, without
the guidance of an agent or publicity of a
gallery, she has had remarkable success
selling artwork and strengthening her
reputation.
To
supplement her artist's sporadic income,
the Dana k design company was created --
an attempt
at merging the compatible worlds of
fashion and visual art, which seem to
share NY’s tangible creative energy.
Kirkpatrick began silk-screening her bold
images onto tanks, tees and trendy
baseball shirts. Her designs were
noticed by New York City's premiere
fashion website, DailyCandy, notorious for
their trend-spotting abilities. The
website (www.dailycandy.com)
ran an article entitled “Feeling
Art-Tee” on April 17th 2002. From there
the designer's participation in "New
York Fashion Cares Summer Stage"
project to which Dana K,LLC donated over
200 tees to
the Cancer fundraiser. The response has
since been overwhelming, forcing Dana k
designs to transform itself almost
overnight into a viable and expanding
business.
Currently Kirkpatrick spends her time
between Los Angeles, and her studio in San
Francisco's Western Addition. The last
year was spent curating for a weekly art
show, various in house commission hires
(SF & NYC), as well as interning for
SF MoMa's renowned Artist's Gallery.
Permanent studio relocation to Los
Angeles's Silver Lake is planned for
January 2004.
