Katy Allgeyer relocated to Los Angeles from New York City in 1991.
Travelling to Asia more than one hundred times influenced Katy's global outlook and sparked life long spiritual exploration that led her to quit a high profile job in the fashion industry in order to practice feng shui and paint full time.
With the success of her first solo exhibition in 2002, an installation of 99 paintings called "WALL OF LOVE: The Art of Feng Shui" which debuted at NoHo's own Barsac Brasserie Restaurant and later traveled to a gallery in Berlin, Germany as part of the annual international Kunstkreuz art festival, Katy decided to move from Venice Beach where she was painting out of her small kitchen to a funky artist loft in downtown L.A. The close proximity of the freeway and easy access to multicultural neighborhoods has been a source of new inspiration for her recent works.
The two groups of work the artist has chosen for NoHoArtsDistrict.com are very different, although both are made using mixed media and paint on canvas.
Both series explore themes of separation, whether it be spiritual, cultural, or physical.
"The Fortunate Saints Series" is an ongoing series of mixed media paintings combining paper Catholic holy cards printed in Italy and sold in the Mexican shops on Olvera Street, Los Angeles; paper fortune cookie sayings from Chinese restaurants, some from recent meals and some vintage going back as far as 1970; and acrylic paint on small scale canvas.
"Containment Series" combines road maps with other paper sources, mesh screening, fencing materials, nails, and acrylic impasto on canvas to suggest an isolated topographical environment. Within the series, "We The People" stands out with its use of the U.S. Constitution, a divided map of the United States, and bits and pieces taken from the A.C.L.U.'s 2004 advertising campaign.
Katy participated in the NoHo Theatre & Arts Festival last year and received an award from the Skirball Cultural Center. Her work has been included in group shows at the Cornell Museum in Florida, the Coos Art Museum in Oregon, the Contemporary Arts Forum of Santa Barbara, the Lankershim Art Gallery, as well as galleries in Staten Island and Pittsburgh.
The artist welcomes studio visits by appointment and is looking for gallery representation. Katy can be contacted by phone at 213.746.1963 or katyallgeyer@mac.com
