I was
recently
asked to
give
suggestions
on how
to make
Holiday
Dinner
special.
Not a
broad
request
in the
slightest…
most
Holiday
meals
are
special,
that is
the
nature
of its
very
existence.
How can
I
summarize
the
perfect
dinner
in a few
paragraphs
when
most
periodicals
dedicate
an
entire
month to
the
subject.
How
about we
focus on
the
“kids
table”.
Just
because
you’re
sitting
at the
kids
table
doesn’t
mean you
have to
eat
without
style.
Hence
forth
refer to
the
“kids
table”
as the
“fun
table”,
because
mark my
words –
that
little
table
will
become
prime
real-estate
if you
play
your
cards
right.
Some of
us are
far away
from our
family
so we
build
surrogate
families
comprised
of good
friends.
Since
our
surrogate
families
have few
or no
kids and
technically
we don’t
officially
have a
“kids
table”
but the
idea
remains
the
same...
some of
us are
forced
to sit
away
from the
rest of
the
group at
a card
table
usually
placed
in the
hallway
or in
the
middle
of the
living
room,
banished
from the
big
group.
Condemned
to be an
outsider,
feeling
like
you’re
punished
for one
reason
or
another.
This
isn’t
the case
at my
parties
the
small
table is
where
the
action
happens.
Just you
try
playing
“Chinese
Fire
Drill”
at the
big
table. A
Chinese
Fire
Drill is
when
everyone
gets up
runs
around
the
table
(or car)
at the
same
time and
sits in
their
seat.
The
young at
heart
love it.
The
first
time I
did
this;
there
was a
roar of
laughter
followed
by a sad
attempt
by the
people
at the
“big
table”
to do
the
same.
There
are tons
of games
you can
play
with a
small
group.
Take the
table to
the
extreme.
The
little
table
should
be fun,
colorful
and a
treat to
sit at.
Overdoing
it is
the key
– make
the
table
more
special.
Being
Formal
Your
using
the good
linens
on the
big
table
right,
why
should
the
little
table
suffer
with a
$5
plastic
table
cloth?
Run to
your
favorite
fabric
store
and
spend a
few
bucks on
a nice
brocade
for the
little
table –
you only
need two
yards,
were
talking
$15
tops.
Wash it
and use
it again
next
time
saving
you
money in
the long
run. If
you’re
crafty
hem the
edges
for
longer
wear, or
use some
of that
glorious
iron-on
hemming
tape.
Your
using
real
cloth
napkins
at the
big
table of
course,
go to
the
discount
store
and pick
up some
washcloths
in your
color
scheme
and use
them as
napkins
at the
small
table.
Everyone
can use
extra
washcloths.
Your
using
napkin
holders
at the
big
table
right,
so use a
lovely
thick
ribbon
to hold
your
napkins
together
on the
little
table.
More
then
likely
your
using
place
markings
at the
big
table,
if not –
use them
anyway
at the
small
table
and
embellish
the
place
holders
with
gold
seals.
You’re
using
the good
stemware
at the
big
table,
pick up
some
plastic
wine
flutes
for the
small
tables
drinks.
Add some
detail
by
putting
a charm
on the
stem.
Your
having a
center
piece or
more the
one on
the big
table
(now it
gets
tricky
since
space is
always
an issue
at the
small
table)
so
miniaturize!
While
your
picking
up your
plastic
stemware
grab
some
plastic
cups too
and a
can of
spray
paint in
gold or
silver.
Paint
the
outside
of a few
cups and
make
mini-bouquets
with
some of
the
flowers
you’re
using on
the big
table.
In
short,
make the
big
table
people
want to
sit at
the
little
table.
Next
party –
you’ll
have
people
requesting
to sit
at the
“fun
table”.
Happy
Holidays!
