| LAPD Update - August Newsletter |

by
LAPD
Officer
Catalano
It
always
surprises
me when
I see
the
media
reporting
another
violent
crime
that
occurred
in North
Hollywood.
It would
appear
that the
violence
is out
of
control
when in
fact, we
have
seen a
steady
decline
over the
last six
years.
Taking
into
account
the
large
increase
in
community
residents
as a
result
of the
rehabilitation
of the
NOHO
Arts
District
and the
daily
influx
of
people
who use
North
Hollywood
as the
last
stop on
the
METRO
Orange
and Red
Lines,
we are
the
second
highest
populated
area of
the city
next to
downtown
Los
Angeles.
Unfortunately,
the
number
of
police
officers
who
protect
our
streets
are not
increasing
at the
same
proportion
as our
growth.
So what
accounts
for a
continuous
decrease
in crime
in our
community?
The
biggest
factor
is the
hard
work by
the
police
officers
of the
North
Hollywood
Division.
In
addition,
we are
very
fortunate
to have
the
outstanding
support
of our
community
members.
Each day
I see
officers
who take
great
pride in
protecting
the
people
and the
property
of our
community
members.
At
times,
this
does not
come
without
sacrifice.
As a
department
and as
police
officers,
we
constantly
strive
for
continuous
improvement.
We are
always
looking
at what
we can
do to
reduce
crime.
Violent
crime
affects
very few
residents
but gets
the
majority
of
attention
from the
media.
Property
crime,
such as
theft of
personal
property
from
inside a
parked
motor
vehicle
occurs
numerous
times
daily.
Generally
referred
to as a
burglary
from a
motor
vehicle
(BFMV),
it has
no
limits
to
where,
when or
how
often it
occurs.
We
complete
about 52
reports
for
BFMV’s
per
week. As
of July
12th,
there
have
been
1,449
reported
BFMV
incidents
in North
Hollywood.
Although
this is
almost a
2%
decline
compared
to last
year at
this
time, we
can do
better.
Violent
crime
has also
declined
over
7.5%.
Instead
of being
reactive
to this
problem
and just
completing
a report
after it
has
occurred,
we the
police
need to
take a
proactive
stance
and help
educate
the
community
in the
prevention
of being
a
victim.
It’s
quite
simple.
Do not
leave
anything
unattended
in plain
view in
your
parked
vehicle
for any
amount
of time.
When you
return,
it may
not be
there.
Today
the most
popular
items
stolen
are
I-pods,
lap top
computers
and GPS
systems.
The
items
are
irrelevant
and the
value
does not
matter
to the
thief.
People
are
always
asking
what
they can
do to
help the
police.
This is
one
crime
problem
that the
community
members’
assistance
can
really
make a
difference.
Any
questions,
comments
or
concerns
should
be
forwarded
