On Saturday, October 15th,
Women in Theatre (WIT) will hold its
second annual Red Carpet Awards at the
Beverly Garland Hotel in North
Hollywood.
WIT was established in 1958 as a
networking organization for women in
theatre and currently has over 100
members. Activities include monthly
luncheons with guest speakers, a
play-reading series, a writers program,
cold reading classes, socials and
community outreach programs.
The Red Carpet Awards were held for the
very first time in 2004, with the hope
of establishing a tradition to honor
individuals and groups for their support
and involvement in the theatrical and
performing arts in the greater Los
Angeles community.
This year’s honorees include: actress
Joan Van Ark who has been a
supportive advisor for Women in Theatre
for a number of years; actress,
director, mask-maker Wendy Gough;
playwright, teacher and political
activist Glenn Hopkins; actress,
comedienne and host of comedy benefits
for numerous charity causes, Heidi
Joyce; actress Christina Kokubo,
founder and producing director of
Changing Perceptions Theatre Company
which transforms and empowers people
with disabilities through its dramatic
arts program; actress, director,
producer Audrey Marlyn Singer who
is the founder of 30 year-old Actors’
Forum Theatre, one of the oldest
membership and producing theatre
companies in Los Angeles; Debbie
Wastling, founder of Kings and
Clowns, a non-profit educational
classical theatre training company
located in the South Bay of Los Angeles;
Emmanuel Lutheran Actors Theatre
Ensemble (ELATE), a twenty year-old
organization dedicated to bringing
affordable theatre to the community that
the whole family can enjoy; the 75
member strong award-winning San
Fernando Valley Valleyaires, a
dedicated barbershop quartet group
established in 1959 which offers an
extensive community outreach program;
artistic directors Chris DeCarlo and
Evelyn Rudie of the Santa Monica
Group Theatre/Santa Monica Playhouse,
the only intimate theatre of its kind to
have produced continuously for almost
half a century; Beverly Mickins,
founder of Story Salon, Southern
California’s longest-running,
continuously performing group dedicated
to the art and craft of story telling;
and Arthur B. Rubinstein, maestro
of Symphony In the Glen since 1993,
whose some 50 free outdoor concerts have
cultivated a new generation of classical
music lovers.
