SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY in Your Community
Contributed by Nora Feldman
Based in nearby Burbank, SHAKESPEARE
AT PLAY was founded in 1999 by Debbie
Gates. SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY is a company
of award-winning professional actors,
directors, writers and producers who
have performed and worked at prestigious
theatrical events all over the world
including venues in China, London and
New York - - both on and off-Broadway,
as well as at regional theatres
throughout the United States and Canada.
Several of the SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY
company members have founded and
operated their own theatre and
entertainment companies. In addition,
some have held senior executive
positions or have had production deals
at some of the major studios and film
and television production companies.
SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY currently has three
types of programs: Bringing a
Shakespearean production or Shakespeare
himself to schools (shows are geared for
individual grade levels from first grade
through high school); SHAKESPEARE AT
PLAY can assist teachers and classes in
mounting their own Shakespearean
production; Shakespeare performances are
also available for the community - - at
a public venue such as a park or
library; and, for a reasonable fee, a
performance can be scheduled by an
organization for use as entertainment
for a fundraiser.
At a time when funding for the arts in
the schools has been cut or limited,
part of SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY’s mission is
bringing classical theatre into the
schools. Studies have shown that when
young people have access to the arts,
they are less likely to drop out of
school, play hooky, or participate in
destructive behavior and are more likely
to take the step towards getting a
college education.
Both parents and teachers recognize the
need for the fine arts and for the
performing arts to be taught and
available in the schools. In fact, the
national PTA has as one of its goals to
bring the arts back into the schools by
2012.
SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY, a 501 © (3)
non-profit company, does not receive any
federal, state or government funds, but
stays afloat due to generous donations
from individuals and grants from
corporations and foundations.
Most recently, SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY
received a grant that will afford the
company the opportunity to bring
Shakespeare to at least 30 LAUSD schools
in the greater Los Angeles area. All
teachers and principals can call
SHAKESPEARE AT PLAY at (818) 566-1925,
and someone will help you with
