This is a column to provide
information about activities of the
Community Redevelopment Agency of the City
of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) in the North
Hollywood Redevelopment Project Area.
Additional information can be found on the
CRA/LA web site at http://www.crala.net/Projects/North_Hollywood/.
The information is updated regularly. There
is also a quarterly report published in hard
copy that may be downloaded from the web,
obtained at our office or sent via US Mail.
What can you tell me about the North
Hollywood Gateway?
The Gateway, designed by artist Peter Shire,
will be positioned in a highly visible
location just north of the busy intersection
of Lankershim Boulevard and Vineland Avenue.
The design emphasizes function, height and
color. The Gateway will span across
Lankershim Boulevard near Huston Street
using a support structure based upon a
standard overhead freeway signage truss with
the artist-designed elements attached to it.
The center will spell out the word “NoHo”
and will be illuminated at night.
The artist’s concept was to celebrate the
area’s history of providing behind the
scenes support to the entertainment industry
and the Gateway depicts characters busily
building sets, operating cameras and
designing costumes. The support structure
will be painted a vibrant yellow, with the
artwork contrasting in a range of reds and
oranges. Mr. Shire will fabricate the
artwork elements and oversee their
installation by the general contractor. Work
is expected to begin in April 2008, with the
entire project completed by September 2008.
The Gateway is funded by CRA/LA and will
complement other improvements initiated by
CRA/LA in the North Hollywood Redevelopment
Project Area. We are looking forward to
presenting our community with this latest
improvement in North Hollywood.
