TIM MORAN

By Scott Detweiler

NoHo Gallery LA (www.nohogalleryla.com) at 5108 Lankershim Boulevard, in North Hollywood (NOHO!), is known for presenting some of the finest art and photography. They also feature some of the best musical talent available to provide music for their art show openings. At a recent opening exhibition at NoHo Gallery LA, I got the chance to catch a performance by jazz guitarist Tim Moran.

Tim is a veteran jazz guitarist who studied under the tutelage of Joe Pass, Lee Ritenour and Larry Carloton (among others) as one of the first students of the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood. The school is well known for cranking out generations of guitar shredders but at that time it was an institution with an emphasis that was primarily on jazz.

Before I mention Tim’s playing I have to talk about the fact that he is also gifted producer. This is evident because when he performs, he does so by playing his guitar against a backdrop of self-recorded tracks that he produced in his own studio. Tim programmed all of the drum tracks and rhythm tracks on these pre-recorded standards. Nice.

Tim plays in a cool, relaxed style that is both inviting and invigorating. People attending the art show were not shy about approaching Tim to complement his playing and converse with him about the pieces, all while he was still playing!

I got to not only see Tim riff over such classics like “Satin Doll” and “Days of Wine and Roses,” but also pleasant surprise pieces, like George Benson’s “Affirmation,” that aren’t often heard performed.

His sound and vibe are the perfect complement to the art gallery scene.

Tim Moran is a jazz guitar player in the grand tradition of the great southern California jazz guitarists. His playing style is smooth, cool and unhurried, giving freedom of space that platforms the articulation of every note and phrase.
