Last year I wrote a blog about designing in a small space. I gave some interesting, creative and helpful tips on how to achieve your goal.
Traditional Design.

Traditional design at times can be a bit formal. Furniture pieces tend to have fully rounded arms, skirted bases, rich and at times heavy fabrics like damask and velvets. Silks, cashmere and even linen fabrics play a role as well. Tassels, tufting and claw feet are part of the classic design elements that add to the grace, charm and charisma of this style. Camel back, Winged backed chairs, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Sheridan and French County are a few of the design styles closely associated with traditional design. Architectural elements such as crown and base molding are a part of traditional design along with great moldings that surround doors and windows.

Beautiful hardwood floors topped with classic Persian or Oriental rugs play a big part in this style. The rich colors mixed with wool and silk always add that perfect touch to any room. Artwork with animals, botanicals and ornate frames are also associated with traditional design.
Transitional design takes elements from both traditional and contemporary design and fuses the two together using furniture, fabrics, colors and various materials.

Many times clients tell me they want a more modern feel when working on their space. Something a little cleaner and stream lined. When I show them exactly what ‘Modern’ design is, they say ‘that’s not what I wanted’. At this point in the meeting, I educate them and explain exactly what Modern design is. This is where we often decide they really meant Contemporary design.

Many times in the past I’ve worked with clients who were really, really afraid of color. They were secure using whites and beiges; hence white walls and beige carpet throughout the entire house. For me, a little more interest is needed in the design scheme. To solve that issue, I add textured fabrics to the plan.

So many times I’m asked about inexpensive ways to create a custom headboard. I tell my clients its pretty simple actually and all depends on the overall look you want to achieve. If you want a simple headboard with interest, then why not try an antique door mounted to the wall. They come in many sizes and finishes depending on the year. Locate an antique architectural salvage yard in your area and start looking. You’ll be surprised what you’ll find. You can sand, prime and paint if you like or leave it a little rustic.

The new color for 2013 is the beautiful Emerald Green. With its soothing powers and wonderful jewel tone, it makes the perfect color to use as an accent.

Last time we talked about some simple decorating ideas. But what if you want to create something a little more elaborate? Let’s go back and address that wreath for the front door for example.

Now that the holidays are upon us, many stress on how to decorate their home. Everyone wants something a little unique and creative without spending tons of money or tons of time. Here are a few quick ideas that won’t break the bank or your schedule.
