Our next show at Cella Gallery titled “ Femme Fatale” features the work of 35 artists hand picked by curators Nicole Bruckman and Stephanie Chefas.

Femme Fatale Cella Gallery on www.nohoartsdistrict.comAs an archetype in history, the Femme Fatale is a timeless figure whose mysterious beauty has inspired generations of artists. In truth, the Femme Fatale’s seductive character refuses to be pigeonholed and is constantly evolving to the social views of the time. As readily as she may be described as a diabolical temptress, she is often a symbol of female independence and a welcomed challenge to traditional gender roles.

As a curator and as an art enthusiast, I love group shows that choose broad and complex themes. The curators for Femme Fatale have challenged a diverse group of artists to bring to life the many layered views on a single subject. The resulting works of art invite the viewers to participate in a conversation that might not otherwise be so deeply explored.

Even in approaching this blog, I had to consider and re-consider my own ideas of the Femme Fatale. Are these women really fiendish enchantresses or simply misunderstood free spirits who refuse to confine themselves to the standards society sets for the “good girl”? In the end, I lean more towards a modern view that Femme Fatale are strong, successful women whose independence stands in direct opposition to the standards set for women of their time.

Nicole and Stephanie have created a show that I am both proud to be a part of but also can’t wait to see. Form you own opinion at the Opening Reception of “Femme Fatale” on Saturday, February 25th from 7-11 pm at Cella Gallery. This one is not to be missed!
