News >> Roller Derby Comes to North Hollywood Park

Written by

The NoHo Arts District is home to many different art forms. Some say that Roller Skating is a sport and an art. Well, I decided to take a look myself and went to North Hollywood Park to see Women's Roller Derby in action. I met with Katie Kitty, the founder of San Fernando Valley Roller Derby.

What exactly is Roller Derby?

It's a contact sport where woman skate on a flat track and consists of players called “jammers” who try to pass groups of players called “the pack.” The game is played with rules and regulations just like every sport. We are athletes and we train just as hard as other athletes in any other sport.

How did SFV Derby start?

I have been skating for 5 years and was a siren with the LA Derby Dolls. I have wanted to start a valley league for many years, so I decided to take the leap and do it. In January of 2011, I started SFV Junior Derby which are females under 18 years of age. I then started SFV Adult Derby (18-up) September of 2011. I began training the adults in October and we had our first official away game in March which we won. The Derby is a family affair for me...I have 2 daughters that play.

What type of training is involved?

We require two practices a week which consists of gearing up, warm up, and then into drills: endurance drills or skill drills and end the night with scrimmage.

How can I join?

There are no qualifications. We can teach you how to skate. We have gear, but eventually you will need to buy own gear. You need to be open minded and willing to have fun It is not easy but you have to be persistent and you will be okay. We have an open roster and split league up into 3 levels based on skill level. Players have to pass a skills test given out every couple of months.

Who are the players in Roller Derby?

Players vary from moms, teachers and scientists All are real women with real lives. Our oldest member is in her 60's and used to be on the thunderbirds in the early days of roller derby

What are some of the benefits of this game?

It is like having a second family. Friendships flourish easily.
It takes everyday worries out of your mine...it is like therapy
The health benefits- 2 hours out of day, you are focused, body releasing endorphins and burning calories. You really can see body changes after a few months.

How much does it cost?

$10 a practice OR $65 per month which includes unlimited practices (2-3 practices per week) We practice at North Hollywood Park and Northridge Skateland.

Where would you like to see the league in 5 year years?

West coast regional champions!

The nominations for the Tonys are in, and they look like quite an eclectic group of shows… but I love that fact. I can only comment on the shows that I have seen, unless however I mention shows that I have heard about, but haven’t had the opportunity of seeing.

Movie Review >> The Lucky One

"Zac Efron Was Amazing - Lucky is Very Lucky"

Director Scott Hicks (The Boys Are Back, Shine) has done an amazing job on this film. He has taken a simple story with complicated characters and made them emotionally accessible to your heart in a believable environment.

I’m a big fan of the Stephanie Miller Show (1150 AM from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. every weekday - now televised live on Current TV!). A hilarious, liberal, politically astute talk show host, Stephanie entertains her audience while successfully educating them at the same time. She refers to herself and many of her listeners as “Happy Clappy Liberals”.
