Geffen Playhouse presents The West Coast Premiere of

RED HOT PATRIOT:

The Kick Ass Wit of Molly Ivins

Directed by David Esbjornson
Written by Margaret and Allison Engel

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Run, don’t walk to the Geffen Playhouse production of Red Hot Patriot: The Kick Ass Wit of Molly Ivins who has been brought to life by the two-time Tony and Oscar nominee, talented and extraordinary Kathleen Turner and directed by David Esbjornson.

A little background here. Molly Ivins was a bold and fiercely independent newspaper columnist who worked for the New York Times (among other publications), and grew up with a very conservative father in a very conservative Texas. Her liberal journalism combined with a sharp tongue, quick-witted sassy humor and toughness gave her the strength to battle cancer with the same ferociousness that she gave to her life and advocating unseen Americans. She was a dynamo! Educated at Smith College, this self-described “beer and Marlboro girl” used words with a “salt and chili” tone, and tells it as Molly sees it.

Brassy and direct, and as “A Summer Place” plays in the background, Ms. Turner becomes Molly Ivins and gives us a glimpse into this notable woman. While you may not agree with her political views, you support her commitment to her opinion of what she believes in. As Molly puts it, “when you make people laugh, they open up their ears and hear you”. What does she say to our American culture? She says plenty!!!

Kathleen Turner is remarkable! But she always is, and we have the pleasure of spending time with her in this wonderful production. Written by twin sisters Margaret Engle and Allison Engel, and directed by Geffen alum David Esbjornson, this is a production filled with anecdotes from Molly’s life and brings her character to life. Joining Ms. Turner from time to time during the performance is a “helper” performed by Matthew Van Oss, who is making his Geffen debut.

Red Hot Patriot: The Kick Ass Wit of Molly Ivins is one to see and will make you want to know more about this interesting woman. Have fun and get ready for some “no holds barred” commentary”. Another great evening at the Geffen.

Enjoy!!!!!!!!
