Art Blog >> Dersk One Comes to NOHO

Tell us about your style of art.

Dersk One: The style of art I am most associated with is Graffiti Art. I do paint and produce art in other styles such as photography, cooking, sculpture, and poetry, but working in a graffiti style has been a passion of mine for over 20 years.

Art

In the American legal system, “all-white” is possible grounds for criminal prosecution. In the art world, however, “all-white” just might be a masterpiece.

Rico Adair Gallery

It is a pleasure to introduce the Rico Adair Gallery to the NoHo Community.....

What made you decide to open up a gallery in NOHO?

The decision was really an answered prayer. We knew we needed to reach out to the NOHO arts district. Once that decision was made, we were immediately given an opportunity by Experience NoHo Festival producers, Cella Gallery and nohoartsdistrict.com to curate the Locals Only Art Gallery for the festival. We were supposed to have the show outdoors in the courtyard of the NOHO commons but the rain forced us indoors to our current location.

Art in a Time of Economic Downturn

With the state of the U.S. economy hardly booming, how have Los Angeles' art galleries weathered the storm, and how has the credit crunch affected the rest of the country's and the world's art communities as a whole? When consumers see their pay checks having to stretch further than ever before, it's hardly surprising those little extras we might usually splash out on fall by the wayside. Perhaps you now make your coffee for the commute at home instead of popping into Starbucks - every little counts, after all. So if we're all tightening our purse strings on even the smallest of items, those higher-priced pieces like artwork that we'll occasionally buy must really be suffering.

Sebastian Kadlecik is originally from the Bay Area but feels quite at home in the NoHo Arts District.  Sebastian has 2 loves...acting and art.  Lets meet him....

Lets first talk about you as an artist

SK:  I love working in charcoals and have a growing love for spray paint.  I am self taught. Recently I illustrated the book cover for Marty, a short story by J.J. Balczo available on Kindle and Nook.  I also did the concept art/promotional art for In Juarez, a feature film that is being shopped around. You can see all the artwork for that on the website: juarez.amarufilms.com.

I have an upcoming web comic Penguins vs. Possums. It's about how the battle of Armageddon will be fought between two enemies that have been fighting for power since the dawn of time, and how we humans will all have to choose a side in this incredible battle. It's also about a lot of other things and has appearances from many pop culture icons. It is, of course, a comedy.  Penguins vs. Possums originally started with a Penguin that I used to draw in High School. He always had spiked hair and oakley sunglasses and he thought he was the coolest thing ever. Then in college, that somehow turned into a battle between Penguins and Possums, i think mainly because of the alliteration (I know they are opossums, but no one says that), and that morphed into an idea that they would decide the outcome of Armageddon.  Only recently did they make their way into web comic form, thanks in large part to my buddy John, with whom I work on this series!Penguins vs. Possums is a spin-off series of EPIC, which was about the adventures of myself and my friend John as we travel through space and time and meet all sorts of beings/creatures/myths along the way. We may or may not save the universe by battling the god Anubis. Epic and Penguins vs. Possums can be found at www.epicwebcomic.com!
