Nick Cooper “Vocal Coach to the Stars”
by Nancy Bianconi, Editor

Nancy: Tell me about your music career

Nick: I began my career as a Solo vocalist...landing my first major role on Broadway. This was followed by singing backgrounds with Kenny Lattimore, Maxwell and Kelly Clarkson.

I did a television tour with American Idol Kelly Clarkson, and provided background vocals for Ruben Studdard’s live performance of “Flying Without Wings” during 2003’s American Idol finale. I actually sang on the first three seasons of American Idol, in addition to singing on the first three finalist's first singles. I have also arranged, sang, and performed in choir scenes for Universal’s Deliver Us From Eva and Sony Pictures’ Two Can Play That Game. I was the first American to ever record in Beijing…revolutionizing the sound of Chinese rhythm-and-blues. Now I am recording with China’s superstar producer Johnny Chen and China’s Artist of the year Jeff Kung.

Nancy: Besides your illustrious music career, aren’t you known as the “Vocal Coach to the Stars”?

Nick: Yes, that’s me. I am a vocal coach for both established and up and coming artists. I have worked with Beyonce, David Archuletta
Alyson Stoner, Tynisha Kellie, Keisha Cole, Ciara, Mary Mary, J Records’s Mario and Jive Recording artist Chanté Moore. I have been a vocal coach to a wide variety of celebrities such as actor Vanessa Williams, dancer/producer Wade Robson to singer/actress Jada Pinkett-Smith and World Boxing Champion Laila Ali.

Nancy: What is your goal as a vocal coach?

Nick: I have my students tap into their true self and not to imitate a popular singer. I want them to find their own style. Each singer has to find their inner voice. That inner voice will guide them to developing their individual style. My real passion is to motivate my students to fulfill their dreams/passions.

Nancy: What advice can you give emerging artists?

Nick: If you are not passionate about your music….give it up. Learn about the business of “Show Business.” Don’t expect what I call Microwave success….instant success. Don’t skip on good, solid vocal training. You must be seriously about studying your craft. One of the most common problems a singer encounters is FEAR. They disguise this feeling of not being good enough by trying to sing like a well known singer. In my vocal classes, I get my students to get out from other people’s shadows.

Nancy I hear you are starting something knew this summer “Vocal Make Over Bootcamp”

Nick: This is what I love to do. I am very excited about the Vocal Boot-Camp. Its Mantra is "Plant a dream, and watch it grow!"
5 Kids will win a free 14-day vocal transformation, walking away with artist development, a demo, and EPK. Bus Radio will be promoting The Boot-camp

Nancy: Although your studio is in Los Angeles, I see you a lot in NoHo.

Nick: I do a lot of rehearsing and training at AMP Rehearsal on Lankershim Blvd.

Nancy: Thanks, Nick….keep making a difference.
