Editors note: How about this? No plastic straws will be used in Los Angeles. Period. Thoughts?

Thanks to the folks at the office of Paul Krekorian for keeping us in the loop on what’s happening at City Hall.

This Earth Day, L.A.'s new law to reduce single-use plastic waste from littering our beaches and waterways goes into effect. Starting April 22, the "plastic straw upon request" law will require restaurants and fast food chains to withhold plastic beverage straws unless a customer requests them.

This ordinance makes Los Angeles the largest municipality in the nation to tackle the top environmental issue of plastic straws. The City's law goes above and beyond state law by encompassing all food or beverage facilities and types of service, including: dine-in, take-out, drive-through, and delivery.

Nearly half a billion plastic straws are used in the United States each day. As a result, plastic pollution contributes to major problems for our oceans and waterways. Plastics do not break down in the environment, but instead break up into smaller pieces, which are ingested by marine life and cause them starve, suffocate or become poisoned. Because of their small size, few straws can be recycled due to limitations of recycling process equipment. When disposed in landfills, plastic straws have the potential to leach toxic pollutants into soil and groundwater.
